Bespoke one-to-one wildlife photography workshops. Online or in-person, from the comfort of your own home or out on location. Learn anything from a beginner’s guide to wildlife photography to more advanced skills. Learn how to set-up your camera and new techniques to help you get the best from your future photographic encounters. Covering anything from exposure basics and focusing to custom settings, workflows or advice for your next big trip, these bespoke workshops are not one 'size fits all’, with each and every one tailored to you. By investing time with Andrew Mason, an experienced photographer who has photographed extensively in the UK and worldwide, you will gain a greater understanding, faster, of how to develop as a wildlife photographer, regardless of your experience or brand of camera equipment. Aside from his many years of photography experience, Andrew gives talks and presentations, and has written many magazine features on wildlife photography, so you are in very safe and capable hands.

Experience Level

These one-to-ones are tailored for your individual level of experience. When you book, Andrew will ask you to provide details of your existing experience and what your aims for the workshop are. The aim is to ensure that you derive the maximum benefit from the workshop.

Photographic Guidance

Andrew has a very detailed knowledge of the technical and creative elements of photography. With many years of teaching and mentoring, Andrew is an effective teacher with a relaxed manner.

Equipment

The principles of wildlife photography are not brand nor camera specific. All makes and models of cameras and lenses are catered for. Andrew will be able to advise you on how to get the best from your existing equipment and any future purchases.

Location

Andrew is based in the Midlands and by default the on location workshop days are held in and around his home in the Midlands. As technical tuition is not location specific, Andrew is able to travel and meet at a convenient location if you live further afield, please contact Andrew to discuss.

Portfolio and Image Review

It may be helpful for your development as a photographer to have a portfolio review. This can be undertaken as a separate workshop or as part of a technical workshop.

On-Going Tuition And Support

As you develop as a wildlife photographer, you may benefit from periodic refreshers. Please contact Andrew to discuss this with him.

Understanding Your Camera

Modern digital cameras offer incredible opportunities to make images, but they can be a little complex to get to grips with. Andrew will go through how to set up and use your equipment, simplifying their use for everyday image making.

Long Lens Technique

Long telephoto lenses are one of the staple lenses used in wildlife photography. Whilst they offer the ability to make stunning images, making sharp images with long lenses requires good technique. Learn how to make sharp images with these lenses when using a tripod and when handholding. 

Remote Camera Setups

Modern cameras can be remotely controlled and some models can even be set up to automatically focus and take images. This opens up new and exciting image making possibilities. Learn how to set up and control your camera remotely.

Focusing Modes

Which focus mode to select with different wildlife in an any given situation is key to making sharp images. Learn how to quickly identify the factors that influence and determine which autofocus mode will work best in which situation and the settings to use.

Understanding Light

Photography is fundamentally about light. Learning how to use the different types of light is the key to making great images, it will allow you to make images that you may not have thought possible.

Mastering Exposure

Understanding how your camera meters for light and exposes for it in any given situation is fundamental to making images in any situation. Learn how to expose different situations and how to creatively adjust your exposure to allow you to develop your style as a photographer.   

Photo Editing

Learn how to enhance your images in the digital darkroom to make the most of them. Andrew offers separate photo editing one-to-ones.

Tailor Your Day For You

Your day is about you. Andrew has a wealth of experience working with photographers of all experiences. Your day will be tailored for you to ensure that you will get the most benefit from it. Andrew will discuss you needs beforehand.

In-Person or Online

In-person workshops are ideal for most situations, particularly for those who want to practice certain techniques in the field. You will learn so much by spending time together with Andrew, watching and learning.

On-line workshops work well if you want to cover a specific technique, have numerous questions about equipment, photography styles, editing, portfolio reviews and general questions. There is no geographic limit to on-line workshops and they can be timed to fit into your schedule.

If you have any questions about whether an in-person or an on-line workshop would be best for you, Andrew will be pleased to discuss your specific needs with you.

Online seesions are limited to 2 hours.

Photographing Specific Wildlife Subjects

Andrew has photographed extensively in the UK, spending many long hours watching and photographing many of the different animals that can be found on our islands. From badgers to mountain hares, red deer to seabirds, dippers to owls. If you have a specific animal that you are interested in photographing, Andrew would be happy to discuss this with you and to work with you to achieve your desired goals..
