Barn Owl In An English Meadow

I’ve been smitten with barn owls for a long, long time. There is something magical about watching these ghostly pale owls quartering a field as they hunt. Being crepuscular, barn owls are typically more active around dawn and dusk. There are locations, however, where barn owls can be more active during the day, particularly when they have young owlets to feed or when the small mammals that make up their main food source are more scarce or are more difficult to hunt. This particular barn owl was regularly hunting during the day over a meadow not far from my home. Sitting quietly in a disused barn at the edge of the meadow, I spent many long days watching and photographing this barn owl as it hunted over the meadow. Whilst hunting, the barn owl would regularly perch on this old fence post that was surrounded by purple flowering thistles.
